Pringle Creek Community sponsored the annual Plant for the Planet Academy. This year, there were five Climate Justice Ambassadors and students from six different schools who came together for this event. The day was filled with learning about climate change, climate justice, and how to plant trees. When youth get together in varying age-groups and learn by doing something tangible, like planting a tree, it’s powerful.

Digging a hole that’s about a foot or two in the ground sounds like a simple task, but it can also be tougher than you think, and also very rewarding. Sometimes it’s a good idea to water the ground a bit, and then wait a few hours, if it’s been a fairly dry season. The best time to plant is usually around October. This is when the rains are coming, and most of the nutrients are going into the roots. Hardier roots mean a better chance of a sapling to make it through a hot and dry summer. So, although one might think that planting in spring is a good idea, that’s mostly for certain types of produce rather than trees. This time around, for Plant for the Planet Academy, the students planted peach and nectarine trees, now that sounds mighty tasty come spring.

That’s the beauty of planting trees, too, it’s not just about the experience of planting it, but it’s also having the opportunity to see it grow and change throughout the years. Plant for the Planet has planted over 15 billion trees. Now, that’s a lot of fresh air and good stuff added to the earth. Pringle Creek Community believes in nature, and that’s why we preserve over 80% of the large tree cover, because we get that trees play a huge part in making the air even more fresh, providing habitats for all the different wildlife moving around, and so much more. We truly appreciate being a part of wonderful events like this that support the environment, and make our community even more green. Green living is what it is all about. It’s healthy, educational, and fun all wrapped into one! Thank you to the trees and to all the wonderful work done by Plant for the Planet.
