Gardens and Orchard in July

The gardens and orchards are full of life now that summer has arrived. All of the vegetable starts were started in the greenhouse from seed and have been moved outside to the main garden. The harvest of these plants will be turned into delicious menu items at Painter's Hall cafe.Swiss chard, summer squash, carrots, tomatoes and basil growing in the greenhouse and garden space.We are growing 2 types of artichokes, Green Globe and Imperial Star. Volunteers at Pringle Creek

In the garden with the Urban Farmer Certification Program

Since January, 24 participants have been learning how to turn their home growing spaces into productive gardens as part of the Pringle Creek Community Urban Farmer Certification program.In its second year the program is designed to teach aspiring Urban Farmers skills such as:Compost and soil healthOrganic seed startingVegetable garden planing and plantingGarden Tool Maintenance IrrigationIdentifying beneficial bugs for the gardenBackyard chickensHome OrchardsPreparing for winter Our instructors include local farmers, community members, OSU Master Gardeners, and university faculty.Along with practicing their new gardening skills at home, some of our urban farmers have filled individual plots in the Pringle Creek gardens ... Preparing the Orchards for Spring

Urban Farmer Update: Over the weekend I attended a pruning workshop held by the Marion County Master Gardeners in preparation for work this week in the orchard. It is the season for late winter pruning and all of the trees are ready for a trim. The plums are showing signs of spring with buds about ready to open. A pear tree appears to be ready to bloom too! New Planters in the Glasshouses

Paco just built three new planters in the Pringle Creek Glasshouses, andNicole (Urban Farmer) is ready to put them to good use! She will growlettuce greens and herbs for Painters Hall Café and Farm Stand sales in thecommunity. Shangri-La and Leslie Middle School are continuing to use theirbenches in the Conservatory for their gardening programs as well. Read more
